I don't have any so I am hoping that you guys will share your experience and expertise! (I know how to use a GP but don't ask me how to make a SOF kayak - yet!).

The Knowledge
Timber Selection
- Gunwales, chines, keelson - Ordinary softwood (Deal?) from the local builder's merchant. Standard or Best Richard Best
- Red Cedar - it's well worth it. Rachael T
- Green Oak -Ribs and Cockpit coaming. Rachael T
Lashing Materials
- Artificial sinew is good, but it's quite elastic. Richard Best & Bill Samson
- Ordinary braided nylon cord is good and easy to tie. Richard Best
- Waxed polyester whipping twine - available from any chandler. Bill Samson
Skinning Materials and coatings
- 15 ounce cotton canvas. Bill Samson
- Nylon has lots of elasticity or Polyester which is slightly less so. Ben A
- 8oz polyester tissue from Dyson painted with Coelan, black gloss. Erik
- Pointnorth's blue nylon - found it excellent, very strong - coated it with Wick's exterior varnish (Bill Samson's tip) Richard Best
- Point north blue ballistic nylon and polyurethane varnish it was ok but the finished cracked easily when pocked hard.nylon and two pack 100% solids polyurethane kit from skin boats .com in the US Thomas Hawson
- Cotton natural linseed varnish and oil paint combination as used in Greenland. Thomas Hawson
- On Canvas - priming coat of slightly thinned solvent-based household paint, followed by about 4 coats of linseed oil based paint. Anders Thygeson recounted by Bill Samson
